The Big O logo for the Quad Crown MTB (Mountain Bike) Stage Race in Omeo Victoria in 2023

November 8-10, 2024

event overview

The newest event in the 2024 Quad Crown Series will be run out of the historical gold mining town of Omeo, located on Victoria’s famous Great Alpine Road.  Previously this region has been better known for epic road rides and back gravel grinds, but a brand new XC and Gravity trail build project undertaken by Common Ground Trails is about to change all that!

The nickname for this event was easy. “The Big O” is appropriate given the town name but also for the delight that we know this new collection of trails will bring to our riders. A sneak peak we have had of the trails and landscape at Omeo gives us a similar feeling to the one we had for our inaugural event in Eden in 2023.

The Big O will get underway with a Prelude on the Friday afternoon in Dinner Plain, around half an hour west of Omeo.  This will offer riders the perfect chance to stop off enroute to Omeo and break up the drive with a quick dash around this little network of trails within the Victorian High Country.  Drop in and register, dust off the bike and get set up for a fun loop of around 10km to be followed by a welcome function and a bite to eat and drink.

Both of the stages for the weekend will run out of Livingstone Creek Reserve in Omeo.  Stage 1 on the Saturday will start with an epic climb up to the peak of Mount Sam that will break up the field before riders will enjoy one of the highlight trails in the new build – an epic 500m descent between Mount Sam across to Mount Mesley and then back to Livingstone Park.  This stage will feature an even mix of back gravel roads, together with the new single track.

On Sunday riders will return for a second helping of brand new single track, as Stage 2 of The Big O will centre around Mount Mesley, where an initial climb out of Livingstone Park up toward all the new trails will then see riders literally lose themselves in a myriad of single track.  We guarantee that all of the new trails, combined with the epic setting of the Great Alpine region, will leave riders grinning from ear to ear and shouting for joy!

The other aspect of the East Gippsland region which we cannot wait for riders to experience is the super array of food, drink and accommodation options around Omeo. The town offers options for every taste as well as a variety of tourist experiences including the Historical Oriental Claims area, as well as Victoria Falls and Kosciusko Lookout.
